Calvin-Builder and Programmer

Matthew L-Head Programmer and Builder

I started my robotics experience in the sixth grade.  It all started because my Mom, my brother, and I were watching TV in our camper because it was raining outside.  One of the TV shows we watched was the world championship of the FRC competition.  This competition really spiked our interest and so we started a FLL team in our town.  This one team kick started  robotics in our town, and since then we have 6 different robotics teams in our town.  During our 3 years of FLL we made it to the state level every year.  And even got 2nd place at one of our qualifiers and won many awards for innovation.

This year, my team and I designed and built the robot for the CHS Robodogs FTC  team.  I focus on Programming and a little bit of building.  Since I was in the Robotics 2 class in school  myself, along with some of my teammates, were able to work on the robot as much as possible.  Because of this, we placed first in all of our qualifiers and are seeded 3rd for the league meet.  We hope to perform well at the league meet and move from there, to the state level.

I'm a member of the canton robodogs #6040, I am a builder I help to build the teams robots. I am trying to start to program in addition to building.

I started robotics in 6th grade with a after school camp I did this for all 3 years of middle school. I wanted to continue so I joined the high school robotics team. Before joining the team I built robots with no real objective, after joining I was building robots with a objective I personally like this change  I like have a purpose when I build it keeps me on track, and more down to earth.

When I'm not in robotics in my free time I like to  snowboard in the winter and play computer games when I have free time. I also enjoy hanging out with friends.

This is my second year on the Canton Robodogs. There are four things that I do on the Canton Robodogs. The first thing that I do  is organize the room and keep things in a neat orderly manner. The second thing that I do is help out the builders whenever they need help.  The third thing that I do is work with the administrative team and make sure everything is done on time. The final thing that I am on this team is that I am a helpful person and team member. Outside of robotics, I play video games, do computer things, and watch television.

I started robotics in seventh grade in the 2012 FLL Senior solutions competition and I also participated in the 2013 FLL Nature's fury. In both of these FLL competitions the team I participated on qualified for states. My team also won numerous awards for our innovation and we came in second in one of the state qualifier competitions. Furthermore, I assisted in mentoring other middle school kids in robotics program after school for two years and I also mentored an FLL team in 2014 First class.

This year I am participating on the CHS Robodogs robotics team (6040) which competes in the FTC robotics challenge. Our team won all three of our league competitions this year on route to our first place finish in the league standings and we were also awarded for our robot's capabilities with the minute man award. I also participate in my school's Robotics 2 class in which we supplement the work done by the robotics team by acting as a place for brainstorming and testing ideas as well as offering time to work on the robot.

I started robotics in middle school when I joined an FLL (First Lego League) robotics team, but even before that my journey towards robotics had already begun through my interest in building things. Since I was very young, I always enjoyed building assorted creations out of little wooded blocks or, of course, legos. In middle school, when knowledge of a Lego robotics opportunity came to my attention from my friends, I did not hesitate to become involved. My experience on that middle school team introduced me to the programming aspect of robotics and spurred my interest in robotics. Following that introduction to robotics, my knowledge and experience in the field has grown through the work I've done in high school. Throughout all my robotics endeavors, I have always learned a lot while having a lot of fun and for that reason I involve myself in robotics.

My role on the team has been that of a builder and a programmer. Our team has been successful because of our ability to collaborate and pull together a variety of ideas from a variety of different people into one final plan superior to each individual's contribution. Through the time in the robotics 2 class, I participated in the brainstorming and development of an ideal robot. The class divided into small groups and each group built and tested a separate robot for the same task and the compiled knowledge gained from the experiences of each robot's development contributed to how the final robot design came together. As a team, we all converted our focus to improving one robot to become the ideal arrangement for completing the challenge. In this improvement process, I was one of a few team members who turned their attention towards learning how to create an autonomous program and configuring the actual program. We have been able to create a working time-based autonomous program and we are beginning an encoder-based autonomous program for improved consistency. Our team has worked well together and has been successful because of it.

Jack H-Builder

My name is Jack Healey, I'm part of the Class of 2018 aqt Canton High. I do Cross country, robotics, winter and spring track.

As a member of the canton high robotics team, I have been involved in many team activities, including robotics class, after school for the team, and doing outreach for the team.

Before I was on the high school team, I was part of a successful FLL team. On this FLL team, we went to states all three years, but more importantly, we started the robotics program in Canton.

Much of what I do on the team is building. Last year I was part of the team that worked on much of the robot's construction. This year I was in the robotics 2 class, so much group in the class was tasked with building a robot that could be used in competition, but ours could not score many points, the teams opted for pink teams.

My name is Jack and I am a 16 year old sophomore.

I chose to do robotics because I really like creating things. I started doing robotics my freshman year and participated in the First tech challenge. Last year I helped complete the engineering notebook for the team and i also did a little bit of programming. I have always had an interest in building things. Robotics is a great experience because we get to learn a ton of new stuff about programming and building.

Last summer I participated in displaying robotics to young kids at a summer camp. It was a fun experience to get a younger group of kids interested in robotics. In my free time I like to play video games.

Jonathan-Engineering Noteboook and Administration

I joined robotics because I've always been interested in robots, and seeing that there was a robotics club gave me the opportunity to help with robots.

The best thing I like about robotics club are the competitions/meets. It is really cool to see other team's robots and how they work.

I am a new member on the robotics team, so I have helped a bit with building on the robot, and just helping out with other tasks on the team.

The picture below is a robot me and other freshman have built. Although its simple, its good for us to learn more on how robots work.

As for other facts about me, I do community service at the canton public library, but I do plan on doing other things for service. Other things I do are cross country, play video games, and solve Rubik's cubes.

Kelsey-Jr. Head of Administration and Manager of the Website

Hi! I'm Kelsey and I'm on the Canton Robotics team (6040). I am a sophomore and this is my second year on the robotics team. I help maintain the engineering notebook by writing in entries or taking pictures to put into the notebook. Need be, I also make sure that all of the screws on the robot are on tight enough and help maintain the robot. When I'm not writing in the engineering notebook or help building the robot, I create the teams scouting papers and maintain this website.

Last year, I started to take an interest in robotics because I took my school's first robotics class. What I love most about the Robotics team is the sense of community. If someone needs some parts, other teams are willing to give it to you. Everyone is very friendly and coming together to reach a common goal is fun.

Outside of the club, I participate in Project Linus Boston, which gives blankets to children in need. This taught me how to machine that is not a robot, but rather a sewing machine!

Matt G-Head of Sponsorship and Team Spirit

Hello! My name is Matt Gaughan, I am a member of the Canton Robodogs, Canton High School's robotics team. This year is my second year at CHS and I am a new member this year on the robotics team and am trying my best in participating in any way I can, since I am new to robotics. I have taken Robotics 1 and am planning on taking the Robotics 2 course next year.

Noah H-Captain and Head of Administration

I was one of the founding members of this team four years ago. I was the lead programmer for my first three years and trained the new kids on the team this year as my main job. I have also help out at events promoting our team especially to younger kids. I have shown our robots to the Kids Camp Duckers and helped the middle school tech teacher with his robotics club after school and during the summer.

Noah W-Administration and Electrical Repairs

I joined the CHS Robodogs because I am interested in robotics and want to learn to program eventually.

Right now I am learning about the robotics team, and I am learning to do things so that I will be able to do more things next year, and help those that don't know how to do those things yet

Peter B-Builder

I am a member of the 6040 Canton High School Robotics team, the Robodogs. I joined the team because I got very interested in robotics in middle school, and wanted to translate that interest into more advanced robots. I also came to the showcase for the robotics team our school held in the fall of 2015. I have been to over 35 states in the United States, hiked the high peak of 8 of those states and been to 3 different countries.

                             Robotics Career:

I have been a participant of FIRST robotics for 5 years. This includes being on a FLL team for 3 seasons (6th through 8th grade) and being on a FTC team for so far 2 years. My robotics career began in 6th grade with 8 other friends of mine. We began a robotics team and we made it to states all three years. Our Robotics team was the first robotics team in canton! We are all so very impressed in the growth that we have helped to build regarding the robotics program in Canton.I joined robotics because I have always been intrigued by engineering, science, and robots and this was the perfect opportunity for me to get hands on experience.

              What I've learned from robotics:

Throughout my robotics career, I have learned how to work as a team,  utilize the engineering design process, create robots and innovative solutions corresponding with the years theme and problem we are asked to solve. Its been a lot of fun to work with others and create innovative solutions to problems given to us. I plan to continue to be part of robotics and the FIRST robotics as long as I can.

Other Things I Take Part In:

Student Council, JSA debate club, Swim Team, Outdoor spring Track, Cross Country, Robotics Team, Hockey, Volunteering with church and outreach groups

Tim-Administration and Engineering Notebook

I am a member of the Canton Robodogs, team 6040. I joined the team because I was interested in robotics but could not fit any robotics class into my schedule. The team presented an opportunity to have time and gain some experience with robots. I am brand new and just recently joined a few months ago. Because I have little experience and am still learning the ropes, I make myself useful by trying to learn more about our robot and see if it can be improved. I also helped figure out how to raise money for the team by having a concession stand at the meet we hosted.

I did cross country in the fall and plan to do track in the spring. I play three instruments, piano, guitar and trumpet. I like trumpet the most and play it as part of the high school jazz band. I also am part of the high school band and participate in multiple festivals. We also play at the sports games for football and basketball. In addition to that I do a lot of community service. I spend the majority of my service at the canton public library but I also participate at the local carnivals in the elementary schools. In my spare time I love to read lots of books, especially mystery and thriller novels. I also like to play video games and hanging out with my friends.

From a young age I always loved to take things apart and figure out how they worked. I was an avid fan of Lego and Minecraft. Spending many hours figuring out how to complete the impossible builds at hand. Robotics is no different; figuring out the problem and coming up with a creative solution. Now we have a lot of awesome tools at our disposal like custom 3D printed parts.

Designing, Building, Programming, and Learning from mistakes is the key to success.

The four years of experience that I have gathered have helped me decide to become a mechanical engineer.

I love the First Tech Challenge because each year we get to build an amazingly different robot each year designed meticulously to do specific things.

I started robotics in seventh grade in the 2012 FLL Senior solutions competition and I also participated in the 2013 FLL Nature's fury. In both of these FLL competitions the team I participated on qualified for states. On the Robotics team I contribute wherever I can including brainstorming ideas and building. I joined to do something great with others while learning new and fascinating things at the same time! It was great to spread the robotics club ideas at the club showcase at our school this year and I have really learned a lot from the experience
